Mary Magdalene was a woman of wealth, power, and vision. Unlike other women in the Bible, Mary of Magdala is not identified in relation to another person; she is not anyone’s mother, wife, or sister.
Legand states that Mary’s parents raised her in the traditions of the Goddess, she trained in mystery schools of the Essene tradition (a mystical branch of Judaism), as well as in the temples of Isis and Hathor in Egypt. In addition, she may have studied (like many wealthy spiritual mystics of the time) in India, Avalon, and Tibet, as well.
